Explanations of relationships are clear and kept short (no rehashing of everything one might have learned in the first novel) and are just enough to make new readers comfortable. Furthermore, a suspect with Church connections would have made a very worthwhile and entertaining addition to the mix of potential wrong-doers (and motives), an opportunity lost through bad preparation. My new book takes you on a journey visiting museums and galleries as well as artists’ studios and their favourite painting spots.

His girlfriend, law professor Marine, brings her formidable intelligence to the case and both tap into their extensive networks of Aix friends and colleagues . Longworth’s charming, if talky, fifth Verlaque and Bonnet mystery (after 2014’s Murder on the Île Sordou) looks at the art world. The doctor is found dead in his office with his head bashed in with an unusual blunt instrument, a 700 year-old religious statue. The new novel opens in the place des Quatre Dauphins with a party in the apartment of the director of the theology department in the university. When Longworth debuted her charming mystery series featuring the crime-solving duo of Judge Antoine Verlaque and his on-again, off-again girlfriend, law professor Marine Bonnet, she won rave reviews. It’s pretty wet and cold here in England so what better than to curl up in front of the fire with a book about Aix? M L Longworth sounds great fun – here’s some background on her if you want to know more: http://mllongworth.

Considering the plot involves an examination of the department's funding (the separation of church and state in France means that no public funds can be provided for the study of religious subjects and so public universities do not have theology departments, a paradox which is brushed aside in a single paragraph which makes only limited sense) , the only way colleges can afford to maintain such courses is with the help of the Catholic Church. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. The investigation is headed by Verlaque, a judge who maintains good relations with the men he works with as well as benefiting from the helping hand of his girlfriend, Marine Bonnet, a law professor. It has a j'ai ne sais quoi quality that doesn't quite meet my expectations for a novel set in France.

This is the second novel in Longworth's detective series, but it is not necessary to have read the first to slip easily into the action of this one. Georges Moutte, the chair of the theology department at the University d’Aix, who was about to retire. Fans of European sleuths with a taste for good food such as Martin Walker’s Bruno (Bruno, Chief of Police) will have fun. Almost more than anything else, the book is a delight to read for its detailed descriptions of foods and wines, while art--I'd not known before of Gallés glass and ex-votos--, history--during the plague, the town fathers of Aix closed the city gates resulting in the plague passing without the loss of a single life in Aix--, literature--"What will survive of us is love. A promising debut for Longworth, who shows there’s more to France than Paris and more to mystery than Maigret. This mystery will be a breath of fresh burgundy for those who miss the old days and the classic detectives.

Almost all our characters are French (apart from the handful of Italians) and are deemed to be speaking French to each other despite the text being written in English, a long-standing convention in writing fiction in a language other than that of the characters.
