It`s also an inspired bit of casting to have Bruce Dern as the greedy and cold-blooded John Gillon, an archetypal Hollywood bad guy if ever there was one. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Roy Palmer was leaning against the ropes between each round in the first few fights; fighters don't do that, since it makes the arm muscles tense and sore. However, the story does take a sinister turn that is a little unexpected given the initially frivolous nature of the script. are a potent one-two punch as a pair of mismatched partners in for the scam of their lives in a movie that's hard to resist.

However, the good news is that now everyone can enjoy what is essentially a boys film, but truly one of the great underrated films of all time. The focus is on characters and trying to best each other and the boxing matches themselves are decent and good at building momentum and suspense. The Great White Hype is witty but at many times is forced and requires more knowledge of the boxing industry for its jokes. Playing to Gillon`s avaricious nature, and with the aid of partner Fitz, Caine sets up a wager with Gillon, that a washed-up has-been fighter can knock out ten straight opponents in the space of 24 hours. Caine and Fitz wager Gillon that aging boxer Honey Ray Palmer can outbox any 10 men in a 24-hour period.Based on a tip by his cellmate, Wolf Forrester (Randall "Tex" Cobb), Caine heads for Diggstown, Georgia, a small town run by the ruthless John Gillon (Bruce Dern). A not so well known gem of a film, which I saw at the cinema at the time, and ought to be in the collection of anyone who likes con-artist/sport/semi-comedy-semi serious type fare. He is feared by many but also respected because he is the former manager of Diggstown's pride and joy, the once-famous boxer Charles Macom Diggs, the man for whom the town is named.

Doing time has proved to be a valuable learning experience where he first heard of Diggstown, the rural capital of illegal cash fighting, which, as a gambling venture, is a con artist’s dream. Ex-con Gabriel Caine and partner Fitz cook up a plan to take rich Diggstown resident John Gillon for all he’s worth. Frank Mangrum officially loses to disqualification after kicking Palmer in the groin, then hitting the referee then gets knocked out by Palmer. Yes he is over the top blah blah blah but he takes risk and among his many bad films there are many good ones. The true tenth fighter is then introduced: Minoso Torres, a tough-as-nails boxer who ruled the boxing underground in the prison from which Caine was recently released. Director Michael Ritchie turns in another crowd-pleasing sports picture with DIGGSTOWN, featuring James Woods as Gabriel Caine, a con artist who has just been released from prison. Ex-con Gabriel Caine (James Wood) heads for Diggstown, a place where unofficial boxing matches are held for big prize money.

He truly embodies a nasty greedy man who feeds off power and corruption and will stop at nothing to win. Still, the dialogue is sharp and watching the hustle unfold is a joy, leading up to a sweet pay-off.

In 'Midnight Sting' (1992), ex-con Gabriel Caine (James Wood) heads for Diggstown, a place where unofficial boxing matches are held for big prize money. Caine finds himself a contender (Louis Gossett Jnr) and bets the crooked boss of Diggstown that his man can beat ten fighters in 24 hours. This movie will have you gripped from the beginning as it starts with a prison fight and develops into Gabriel (James woods), pulling of a huge con with the help of Lou Gossett Junior. In the romantic comedy 'Bull Durham' (1988), seasoned baseball player (Kevin Costner) is assigned to coach a hot-shot newcomer (Tim Robbins).
