His league career started in earnest at Exeter City, but ground to a swift halt at the end of the 1966-67 season. The former Southampton and England winger still had the brains and the touch to lead opponents at this level a merry dance and in McNeil he found the ideal man to profit from his probings.

The FA Cup is a competition engrained in the Club’s history, with the most famous victory coming against Arsenal in 1992. He himself later entered management, spending five seasons at the helm with Wrexham, before plying his trade in the League of Wales with Flint Town United, Caernarfon Town and NEWI Cefn Druids. We meet footballing celebrities too, such as Peter Shilton, Graham Taylor, George best, John Sillett and many more whom Dixie met. The club McNeil landed at was Corby Town and although he continued to find the net his new side were relegated from the Southern League Premier Division after his first season with them.Reserves/Youth: All reserve and youth competitions from age group U17 and above (including friendlies). They played brilliantly when they came to us, but it’s ironic that a corner flag falling down twice helped us score a goal. Having gone into the dressing room, the players decided to have a look at the pitch and what a shock, 40-odd thousand fans were already in the ground and it was full! In 1985, with his squad decimated by injury, McNeil made a brief appearance as a substitute at Notts County in an FA Cup replay. McNeil spent two and a half seasons at Northampton, scoring in the FA Cup match against Manchester United in which George Best scored six times.

So did Wrexham for whom McNeil is one of a number of links with the Sky Blues, who lifted the FA Cup under Sillett in 1987.There were also a couple of brief, though praiseworthy, excursions into Europe and McNeil managed to score in the narrow defeats against NK Rijeka and FC Magdeburg.

At the end of the day as well with us being non-league, I’m sure the players will want to get to the third round proper and face a Premier League club. Dixie McNeil had to sit out the clubs excellent march to the 5th round of the League Cup and eventual defeat by Liverpool as he was cup tied after playing in the competition for Hereford. McNeil scored again and gave Willie Young a torrid time in a highly physical duel but the Gunners came through to win a thriller 3-2.He later had successful spells with Lincoln City and Hereford United, helping the latter to reach the dizzy heights of the Second Division. SEE the BACKSIDE OF the PHOTO - many times the image for sale will present stamps, dates, and other publication details - these marks attest to and increase the value of the press photos. In 1966 Leicester allowed the nineteen year old McNeil to leave on a free transfer and he moved to Exeter City in the fourth division.

Wrexham managed four seasons in the second division and, after a slow start, McNeil proved again that he could score goals at that level, even well into his mid 30’s. He managed 14 league goals in a struggling Northampton side before moving towards the upper reaches of the fourth division with a January move to Lincoln City. After a spell as assistant manager at Coventry City, McNeil became a sales representative with Marston's Brewery, as well as reporting on Wrexham's games for local radio. Thanks, Dixie, for sharing your memories of an illustrious career that is a model for all aspiring youngsters to emulate.Something had to be done because the club was going down the same old road, I tried to get money for new players but was told none was available. Phil Parkinson is targeting a second league victory of 2024, as they welcome AFC Wimbledon to the STōK Cae Ras. It was at the start of the 1971-72 season that McNeil really began to hit the goal trail with a vengeance. Press photos have been available to the public for just a few years, and similar to baseball cards, they have attracted investors and collectors.
