These various sources are handled better in the stereo track than in the surround track, especially in the midrange. On the island they actually find a number of prehistoric animals and also their greatest enemy, Kong, who falls in love with the beautiful actress Ann. The production disasters on the set of King Kong, mostly related to the bloated budget and constantly failing mechanical body of the ape, cannot be understated. Not in terms of technical quality (I doubt any task would daunt him following that particular trilogy), but because someone still hasn't bought a pair of editing scissors.

While King Kong’s 4K HDR picture quality is for the most part insanely good, going far beyond anything I’d expected, there are one or two little niggles. I’m very aware, though, that the notion of an extended version of King Kong won’t exactly come as music to the ears of the many people out there who already think Peter Jackson films are self-indulgently long. The film only received a 2K digital intermediate for its cinema release, and Universal’s 4K form book would suggest that an upscale of this has been used for the 4K Blu-ray rather than a new 4K scan being done from a 35mm print. The Art Galleries – Again, the same material as the previously-released DVD, the artwork has not changed. This new StudioCanal release drops some of the special features from Shout’s 2021 Blu-ray release and doesn’t add anything new.

Despite a few noticeable moments, which sadly haven’t got any better over time, the visuals for this film are incredible. Kong roars to Ultra HD with a fantastic DTS:X soundtrack that, like the video, comes with minor improvements but doesn't completely take down its reference-quality DTS-HD counterpart.
